Individual Homework
Please analyse the three feature articles you were given under the following headings:
 The intro ( introductory paragraph)
 The narrative style and tone
 What sort of publication do you think it appeared in? Demographically, who might the typical reader be?
 The final paragraph
Please see the word document, Homework Week 1, for more detail.

‘Another one bites the dust’ – Cadbury
 The intro – Lamenting/whining about the decline of ownership of British businesses – especially those that are considered ‘national treasures’ and part of the country’s iconic collective, as well as highlighting why the topic is currently important – the Cadbury takeover is the zeitgeist.
 The narrative style and tone – whinging – points out that Britain’s stance (historically) as a force to be reckoned with in the world is being eroded away – our sports stars get constantly beaten on home soil and our manufacturing industry seems to be stolen piece by piece by foreign firms – Britain is no longer the world super power it was during the days of the British Empire.
 What sort of publication do you think it appeared in? Demographically, who might the typical reader be? – The document says it’s from the Economist, so those in high powered business style jobs, those with an interest in the Economy and probably the further educated classes (as they tend to take more interest in complex global matters)
 The final paragraph – Initially seems like it is going to end on an optimistic note and contradict the majority of the article, but then ends that Cadbury was doing just fine as it was and so it laments what it seems to suggest as the shareholders blind greed – ‘A pity, perhaps, that its shareholders went for the short-term gain’.

‘Five more months of this nonsense!’ – The general election
 The intro – Seems exasperated. Complaining how the political election process seems to be dragging on for an unusually long period of time and how the political battle seems to be impossible to escape.
 The narrative style and tone – Exasperated and aggressive. Not much focus on the Conservatives really, but Labour as clearly attacked and belittled. The article openly criticises Labour and particularly Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown. It is unclear whether the piece supports the Conservatives or not because it suggests that they will inevitably win the general election, but is unsure whether they’ll actually be any good once they’re in the driving seat.
 What sort of publication do you think it appeared in? Demographically, who might the typical reader be? It says it was published in the Daily Mail and according to their website; ‘the Daily Mail has more ABC1 readers than any other national newspaper’ and ‘...has broad appeal across genders and all cross sections of the population with its heart land remaining in the Mid Britain demographic. This audience forms the economic backbone of the UK and is hugely influential with the power to make or break brands.’ From: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
 The final paragraph – Leaves on an uncertain note – will the conservatives actually be efficient/effective in solving the nation’s financial problems?

Chrisse Hynde interview
 The intro – Describes the person the interview is on before the person is actually formally introduced in the text. The adjectives detail the image that has made the person successful and iconic and then introduces the idea that despite having a 30 year long career, Chrisse Hynde isn’t ready to slow down just yet – hence the interview.
 The narrative style and tone – very descriptive, especially on the kind of body language that has made her iconic image. Lots of name drops in an almost casual manner. The interviewee seems needlessly hostile and aggressive – though that may be due to her ‘famous hatred of publicity’. It switched between this quite adjective laden narrative style to a more factual style that details happenings outside the interview. Littered with quotes from the interviewee, though it is in a narrative structure rather than Q&A, which some publications adopt.
 What sort of publication do you think it appeared in? Demographically, who might the typical reader be? It’s from the Telegraph ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] – according to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] the demographics of the Telegraph suggest that the target reader is that of mainly older, full-time workers in the higher-end of the pay scale, particularly professionals, managers and white collar workers. These people, it appears, have more disposable income. The readership is also predominately male (approximately 55.2% of the readership).
 The final paragraph – Ends on a quote. Though the interviewee been seemingly aggressive or reluctant to ‘open up’ during the interview, the last quote is sizeable (in comparison) and optimistic, yet ‘down to Earth’, reiterating the sentiment given in the introduction that despite being a ‘mature’ singer, Hynde has no intentions of ending her career at the moment. She also comments that the world and the industry which she works in are changing all the time, that she thinks herself lucky to still have her career in the music sector and that, if she weren’t a singer, the prospects would be bleak – despite the word ‘career’ being ‘dirty’ in her youth, now she knows she is fortunate in her employment.

Hi Hannah,
I thought your observations were brilliant. I've just included a few little additions that might add to the work.

Cadbury: starts with reminding the reader of past take overs and creates an atmosphere of loss.
Topical links could be to national pride, foreign competition and bad management.
Informs
ending summarises much of what is said in the article.

Five more months: Starts by comparing the present with how things were in the past.
Topical links - expenses scandal, Brown's previous comments about the recession
Entertaining but possibly persuasive
Daily Mail - pro-Tory?

Chrissie Hynde - Intro refers to her past successes
Entertaining
focuses much more on how she looks and acts
Could also argue that the article might be found in a music magazine.
Readership aimed at more middle-aged people who were fans of her before and rock music?
