Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
I have had a quick look at other headlines TB is the headline news today.
the death of John Slasinger is second then it is between the ' killer mum' Fiona Donnison and the MMR scandal doctor.

I'd forgotten about the killer mum one. Hadn't heard about the MMR thingy. I've not read Catcher in the Rye and don't have a clue about that author (I'm terribly unread, I know) so I can't help much on that score. Has anyone else got info on him?

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
Ok, as Sian's pointed out to me, this task was meant to be done in class and is only meant to take about 20 mins so, although we're really doing well, I think we're focussing too much on this one. No worries about that though.
I think the TB with the economy and students link one is the best, 'cause as you've said Sue, its the biggest news headline today and we have lots of ideas for content and publication potential.

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
Unless anyone is an expert on JDS - the Tony Blair one would be great - especially if we can look at how the Government has let students down after promising so much - all to pay for a war many people disagreed with

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
Awesome Maria, Carol, Sian you ok with that? I don't want anyone to feel left out / left behind, that's happened to me before and it's not nice.
If we're all ok with that then, we just need to list our responses to the bullets and I can post it later. Then you guys can look at that second thread I mentioned and we're sorted

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
If we take the Blair story forward it could be an informative and persuasive piece which can look at the future elections adn the impact Blair had on the country, which also includes education.
we could say it would be printed in a newspaper that is pro-conservative (possibly The Sun) in which case it would be biased and opinionated bordering on derrogative.
Interview member of conservatives, Tony Blair, adn the general public (e.g. students)#
Graphics: comparison of labour and conservatives popularity and how labour has declined.
Quotes from Tony's past promises
Hi everyone, Carol and I came up with thuis for the group activity, its just to get the ball rolling.

Then run like the wind Siany! I've got to leave before 11:30 'cause of ice skating and taking my sister to college, but cause we've got the forum we can carry on with the other piece after, so long as we get this one done. I'm aware Maria's meeting her friend too, so we've got to get a wriggle on.
Bullet 1:
our ideas are: TB one (our focus), Haiti and the author (I forget his name 'cause I'm a moron)
Bullet 2: Focus of our TB article, what shall we put that as? Education, economy, politics?

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
Awesome work you guys
One question, I don't read the Sun, but are they pro-torie? All my General Studies teachers would say about it at school was "lads, look at page 3 during class and you get detention" and "its for people who have only just learnt to read"
that may have been their own personal opinion though.

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
If we do the TB one:
Purpose: information/ provide a voice for students
Content :TB's promises to students at the start of his term in office/ how it got shelved by the expense of the war/ look at who introduced tuiition fees, and why they are going up again because of war/recession not caused by students/ students as innocent victims in all of this/
Which Publication: Daily Mirror? Socialist Worker? Big issue? Daily Mail?
Style and tone: serious and angry
Who to interview:Tony Blair/ lots of angry students
Graphics: Photos of TB and angry students

Didn't they change their support from Labour to Tory? Can you think of another Tory paper? We don't read the Sun either its just that we remembered it from last semester. Get the mop out Sian!!!!

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
I have another idea for a graphic: my annual statement of debt from the LEA. That'd get people angry!
As for the Sun, they may have done, didn't do journalism last semester so I'm not as up to date as you guys. We could just get around it by saying 'a tory inclined' newspaper lol.

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
The Sun used to support Tony Blair, but Rupert Murdoch swaped to the Tories recently.
Other Tory papers are daily Mail and the telegraph

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
There we go then, so we've got a potential slant as a piece of pro-torie writing, but I also like Sian's idea that we could tone it down to just a general rant about students being ripped off so it can go in the uni paper as well.

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
So we've essentially answered the questions haven't we? Could someone collate the ideas we've come up with and post them? I would, but I'm running out of time and my friend's just messaged me with a crisis I'm trying to sort out for her.

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
hey,
just a few points to put on the wolf post if you havent already -
content – background on the beginning of iraq war – mention blair’s interview(took place this morning i think -you can find this on the guardian's website and various other places) about this, both blair and browns education policies, students, problems with education, unemployment and economy in the recession
interview – quotes from blair’s interview, things brown says, interviews with students, reps and teachers?
Graphics etc – pic of blairs interview, couple of the students interviewed, copy of education policy, chart of increasing tuition fees over last few years, numbers/polls/charts of elections, chart of unemployed university graduates over last few years...
have a good weekend everyone

Re: Ideas for week 1's homework
Oooh I like the idea of putting in a chart of unemployed graduates, as if we didn't want to depress people enough!
Awesome work though guys, its a shame we don't actually have to write the article, by the looks of it, it could've been a belter.
